Anguilla’s Renowned Festival Del Mar Took Place This Easter Weekend… A Highlight Of Extraordinary Eats!

April 14 – 28, 2019

Anguilla’s inaugural culinary event, Extraordinary Eats! kicked off on Sunday, April 14 – a two-week, island wide celebration of delectable Anguillian cuisine.

festival del mar.jpg

Festival del Mar, the annual celebration of all things from the sea, took place on the Easter weekend, April 20th and 21st, hosted for the past twelve years in the beautiful fishing village of Island Harbour.  This fun filled weekend serves up creative seafood meals, delicacies, and other popular traditional treats – served with rich sides of traditional rice and peas or the ever-popular johnny cakes.

Festival Del Mar is not only about the food; local string bands and musicians take to the stage with live performances all day and into the night. And If food and music aren’t enough, you can also participate in the many traditional games and beach activities, from the early morning deep sea fishing tournament, which opens up the weekend festival starting at 5am, to swimming races, a model boat race, sunfish races and the traditional B-Class boat race

Taste of The Strip, hosted on The Strip in The Valley on Friday, April 26th, features Anguilla’s famous food trucks, and local specialties like peas soup, johnny cakes, BBQ ribs, steamed fish, oxtail stew and conch soup.  A series of live music and cultural performances by local artistes and bands adds to the festive atmosphere throughout the evening.

The grand finale to Extraordinary Eats is the Chefs Extraordinaires evening on Saturday, April 27th, hosted by Da Vida’s Restaurant.  Renowned Anguillian chef Kerth Gumbs, Head Chef at the prestigious Ormer Mayfair in London, joins fellow Anguillians Tarisa Reid, Chef de Partie at the London based Compass Group, and Mtima Daniels, Sous Chef at the legendary Chateau Marmont hotel in Los Angeles to create a culinary extravaganza. The event will serve as a fundraiser for the Anguilla Culinary Team, a group of extraordinarily talented young chefs, to finance their participation in upcoming regional culinary competitions.

A host of participating resorts and restaurants are offering Prix Fixe lunch and dinner menus throughout the two week period, with a price point of USD$35 for a two course lunch, and USD$65 for a three course dinner. Join in The Celebration of Anguilla Day

May 30th is Anguilla’s National Day, marking the island’s secession from the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis in a bloodless revolution in 1967.

anguilla day kids.jpg

Anguilla’s annual celebration of the legendary Anguilla Revolution is marked by pomp and pageantry in the morning, and boat racing and parties in the afternoon.  Anguillians celebrate this day starting with a Parade on the James Ronald Webster Park and the presentation of awards for distinguished service to the nation.

It continues with the Round-the-Island Boatrace, a hotly contested, all day race, featuring A-Class Boats that starts and ends in Sandy Ground.  The boats are locally made and championed by their respective communities.  Spectators follow their favorite boats and crews both on land and at sea. Seeing them in full sail is quite a spectacle!

Step Back Into Yesteryear at the Welches Folk Festival

Whit Monday, June 10

welches festival.jpg

This annual celebration of Anguillian traditions, now in its twelfth year, is held on the ball field in Welches Village, on the public holiday of Whit Monday. In 2007, a group of villagers met, and the idea of having an activity to educate and expose the village’s children to the traditional practices and ways of life was shared.

The villagers were excited about the idea and immediately began planning the activity, in the spirit of coming together that is typical at Welches. All things at this fest are of yesteryear, including food, drinks, toys, games and music.

The festival starts at around 5:30 am, with an old fashioned breakfast of “flour pap” (a type of porridge) to start your day.  Lunch may be a delicious serving of Kale and Rice, Peas and Rice, Corn Fungi, Dumpling, Fried Fish, Steamed Fish, Stewed Fish, Stewed and Curried Goat, Stewed and Baked Chicken.  A variety of delicious soups are also on offer, including Souse, Pea Soup with Corned  Pork, Corn Soup, Meat Soup and Chicken Soup and the all-time favorites, Yard Fowl Soup and, Head and Foot Soup.

If you have a sweet tooth, leave space for dessert -- Sweet Potato Pudding, Conkies, Sweet Potato Dumplings, Banana Bread, Pumpkin Bread, Tarts, Sugar Cakes, Coconut Tarts, Sham, and a variety of jams (Tamarind, Guava and Cherry).  Only homemade local drinks are available, including lemonade, tamarind, mauby, ginger beer and passion fruit drink.

Festival highlights include:

  • Traditional Dances. Eg Hokey Pokey Dance, Cake Walk Dance

  • Traditional Games; Lime and Spoon Races, Bottle Races, Three Legged Race, Wheel Barrow Race

  • Old Time Fashion Show highlighting clothing of the past and present

  • Old Time Wedding

Summer Festival in Anguilla

Summer Festival in Anguilla

August 1 - 11

Summer Festival is a ten day celebration of carnival activities by night, and Boat racing, beach parties, concerts and street dancing by day – a forty-five year tradition on the island of Anguilla.

The Grand Parade of Troupes is an exquisite display of glorious colorful costumes. This year visitors will be invited to select their costumes online, pay for them on island, and join in the Parade on Friday, August 5th.

All day Beach parties and concerts are a staple of Summer Festival. And of course, there is boat racing!  A series of races take place over the season, with the final Champion of Champions Race marking the official end of the boat racing calendar for the year, and bestowing bragging rights on the winner until the next season.

Eyes Wide Shut on August 8, billed as Anguilla’s ultimate daybreak fete, is another highlight of Summer Festival.  This spectacular, early morning beach party and concert at Sandy Ground features leading regional and international artists.

The Poker Run – scheduled this year for August 10 – is an exciting, all day event during Summer Festival that attracts up to 100 boats. There are 4 stops between the start and finish – Da Vida’s, Island Harbour, Rendezvous Bay and Meads Bay.  At each stop there is a beach party, and a host of games and competitions -- beer drinking contests, dance contests, games, music and lots of great food .

The Poker run gives players the opportunity to play for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th prizes or the opportunity to join fun action on the party boat.   The winning poker hand gets US$5,000 – most important is that a great time is had by all!

A Beloved Festival Returns This March

52605790_1193293734156239_8091661185289551872_n.jpg

Anguilla’s iconic Moonsplash Music Festival will once again take place under a full moon at the legendary Dune Preserve on Rendezvous Bay, from March 21 – 24, 2019. This year’s Moonsplash returns to its roots as the Coolest Beach Party in the Caribbean. Timed to coincide with the first full moon of the month, the magical evenings unfold at the rustic Dune Preserve, Bankie’s legendary retreat, that doubles as laid back beach bar by day and pulsating dance party each evening.

Highlights of this year’s Festival are two, not to be missed celebrations -- Sheriff Bob’s 80th Birthday Bash and Third World and Friends 40th Anniversary celebration. Robert Saidenberg, The Sheriff of Goodtimes (aka Sheriff Bob) met Bankie Banx in the late 80s at a recording studio in New York City. Bankie invited Sheriff down to Anguilla and that summer they started planning the first Moonsplash. Third World, the ‘Reggae Ambassadors’, is one of the longest lived Reggae bands of all time, and the world’s greatest reggae fusion band, mixing in elements of R&B, funk, pop, rock, dancehall and rap

Moonsplash kicks off at 6:30PM on Friday, March 22nd with Funky Horns SXM on the Beach Stage, along with other supporting acts. Headliners on the Main Stage later that evening are Anguilla’s own Omari Banks and the legendary Mighty Diamonds, with additional supporting acts to be announced.

On Saturday, March 23rd, starting from 6:30PM on the Beach Stage, festival fans will be treated to the Sheriff's 80th Birthday Bash featuring Orange Grove, the popular Sint Maarten band whose infectious sound echoes traces of rock, hip-hop and reggae, and Sheriff and the Deputy, featuring Kat Minogue and Captain Bob, who play traditional Folk, Rock, and Country music

The Third World and Friends 40th Anniversary Celebration takes the Main Stage later that evening, along with the Festival’s own impresario, the incomparable Bankie Banx, and the versatile True Intentions, a reggae band that originated in Anguilla with roots in Dominica, who has rocked the local and regional music scene. A surprise guest will complete Saturday’s fantastic line up.

On Sunday, March 24th, the Moonsplash Beach party commences at 11:30AM with spontaneous appearances by the Bankie Banx Moonsplash cast. A host of fun activities are planned for the day.

Cool vibes, great beaches, thrilling performances, amazing music -- what more could you wish for? A Beyond Extraordinary experience awaits you when you join us at Moonsplash in Anguilla next month.
